Nissim Ezekiel: Irani Restaurant Instructions

Happy Friday folks! Here's a nice Nissim Ezekiel poem for your enjoyment:

Do not spit
Do not sit more
Pay promptly, time is valuable
Do not write letter
without order refreshment
Do not comb,
hair is spoiling floor
Do not make mischiefs in cabin
our waiter is reporting
Come again
All are welcome whatever cast
If not satisfied tell us
otherwise tell others

------ Nissim Ezekiel, 1972

I wonder if an Irani restaurant actually had that list up on the wall :)

Hey Quizman! Just wanted to let you know that I've tagged you in a "six unspectacular quirks" meme. Feel free to participate or not. :)

Actually, yes. The Sorry No restaurant featured in Salman Rushdie's 'The Moor's last sigh' is a real restaurant. I've posted the pic (taken from the web) in the KQA website.

That is NOT Nissim Ezekiel's poem Irani Restaurant instructions. Here it is:

Do not write letter
Without order refreshment
Do not comb
Hair is spoiling floor
Do not make mischiefs in cabin
Our waiter is reporting

Come again
All are welcome whatever caste
If not satisfied tell us
Otherwise tell others
God is great.

Hi. Someone asked if there indeed was a restaurant which displayed such a board. There used to be two Irani restaurants diagonally opposite Metro Cinema at the mouth of the lane that leads to Grigaum from Metro Square. Kyani & Co is still functional, while Bastani & Co has shut down. Bastani had an identical board displayed at the entrance. Ezekiel's poem is inspired by that.

You have really helped several of individuals like me, who have been searching internet from past quite a long time to find detailed information on this particular topic. Thanks a ton.
